Babylon 5, among many another of things, was known for epic scale space battle scenes. B5: A Call to Arms, by Mongoose Publishing, is the latest incarnation of a Babylon 5 space combat game. Designed to be simple and fast playing, the game's rules mimic the psuedo-physics and weapons from the television show. Just about every race, including the powerful first ones, are playable and the game works well on both small and large scale combat. In additional to stand alone rules, rules exist for campaigns of all sizes and for many of the famous battles from all seasons and movies. For the most part, Call to Arms is now out of production. Mongoose publishing continues to support the game through its company magazine, but only place figures will be found is on the surplus market.
Mongoose Publishing began as a manufacturer of role playing games in 2001. They produced numerous systems based on the D20 rule system, but it wasn't until they acquired the Babylon 5 license, did they enter the world of miniature war gaming. Thanks to brand name, Babylon 5 had a following, but it wasn't enough to keep the game alive and in 2008 Mongoose Publishing ended formal support for the game and stated they would only provide updates through the company magazine – Signs and Portents. B5: A Call to Arms, was not their only miniature line. They also produced games based on the Starship Troopers movie license and they created their own modern warfare game called Battlefield Evolution. Starship Troopers is no longer in print and while Battlefield Evolution is still supported, Mongoose Publishing no longer produces a miniature line for the game.
